Keynote 1: Modernizing Networking from the Edge In

Lixia Zhang (UCLA)

Abstract:  Computing devices have penetrated into every corner of the modern society. What is the best way to network them?  There seems a broad recognition of the various limitations with today’s TCP/IP protocol stack; at the same time, its replacement also seems inconceivable.  Drawing lessons learned from the 35 years of Internet development, this talk contemplates the following questions: How should a new protocol stack look like?  How do we know we get a right one?  And how can a new protocol stack ever get rolled out?  A brave exploration of these seemingly daunting questions could be both informative and provocative, generating further discussions.

Keynote 2: Networking for the Intelligent Edge: From a Data-centric IoT to Ambient Intelligence

Eve Schooler (Intel)

Abstract: To enable the Internet of Things, there has been a dramatic shift from Cloud to Edge computing. Consequently, a serious effort is underway to rethink where traditional cloud functionality (compute/analytics, storage, networking, control and data management) can and should reside in the network, to meet the varied requirements of IoT use cases. While the network edge is an important element in this transformation, it is not without its ambiguities and challenges. This talk delves into several of these issues: it asks where exactly is the network edge, characterizes the tussle between competing definitions, examines the role of an intelligent edge in an era witnessing the convergence of wireline and wireless networks, and grapples with how to offer distributed yet seamless IoT data stewardship within this context. In essence, the intelligent network edge is part of a broader data-centric IoT vision that is evolving towards a completely disaggregated data center, where the network itself is a key enabler for ambient intelligence.
